Introduction

Physical Characteristics:- The Regional State of Oromia lies in the central part of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, with larger protrusions towards the south and west directions. Astronomically, it extends from 3° 40'N to 10°46' latitude and from 34°08E to 42°55'E longitude. With an area of 353,690km2 (about 32% of the total area of the country) it ranks of first out of the nine Regional States and two Administrative Council of Ethiopia.
Population:- According to the 1994 Population and Housing Census result, in the year 1997, Oromia had about 20 million population, of which 17,73,000 were rural (49,8% females) and 2,300,000 were urban (52.9% females). This makes ti the most populous Region in Ethiopia.
Agriculture:- In the year understudy, about 30.7%, 23.7% and 18.7% of the total area of Oromiya were arable (about 69% of the total arabel land was under cultivation), parture and forest (including thick forest (7%), woodland, riverine, bushes and shrubs, and man made forests) lands respectively, while the rest was accounted for degraded, built-up and other areas.
