SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE OF SIRARO DISTRICT
Physical Characteristics:- The district shares borderlines with Southern Peoples’ Regional State. Arsi Negele and Shashemene districts (fig.6). Sirari, with an area of 1498.94 km2, is the third largest district in East Shewa zone. Aje is the administrative center of the district. Its elevation ranges from 1500-2300m. The bilate is the only significant river, which forms the southwestern boundary of Siraro with Southern Peoples’ Regional State. Siraro shares Shala Lake with Arsi Negele district. Lake Awassa is also found along the southeastern border of Siraro district. The district is totally within the sub-tropical agro-climatic zone. Andosol is the only soil type available in Siraro district. Coniferous forests, woodland and savanna prevail in the district. The major types of wildlife of the districts are Swayne’s Hartebeest, Greater Kudu, Cheetah, Spotted Hyena, Warthog, Jackal, monkey, Ape and several species of birds. There is a wildlife sanctuary in the district.
