Physical Characteristics:- Ilu district having an area of 305.2 km2 from urban centers, is located along Finfinne-Jimma main road. It has common boundaries with Denid, Ejere, Alemgena, tole, Becho and Dawo districts (fig.12). Teji is the district capital. Topographically, the district is characterized by diversified landforms, i.e., plateaus, hills, plains and valleys. The district is drained by Awash, Teji, Jaliwan, Kelina and Lito perennial rivers. Ilu lies totally within woindadega climatic zone and accordingly explained by annual rainfall ranging between 800 and 1000mm. Dystric Nitosol is the only dominant soil type found in the district. Woodland and plantation forests are sparsely available in Illu. But there are no protected forests and wildlife conservation areas. However, anguis baboon, vervet monkey, spotted hyena, bush buck, bush duiker, black backed jackal, civet and hare are found in the district.
